GoldFynch has a robust upload system, but there are scenarios in which certain operating systems and browsers can cause processing errors while uploading files. Follow the steps listed below to make sure your files are uploaded without any hassle.
IMPORTANT: Make sure that you don't move, rename or delete any of the files or folders on your system while any uploads are taking place as this will cause the upload to error out.
General upload of files
If your documents are already available as zip files:
- Open your case in GoldFynch and click on the 'Files' button in the left pane
- Navigate to the folder in GoldFynch to which you want to add the documents
- You can now upload your files in two ways:
Drag-and-drop method
Step 1. Click on the zip file on your desktop, drag it to the GoldFynch window of your browser, and release the button
Upload files button
Step 1. Click on the 'Upload files' button in the top right corner of your window and navigate to the folder on your computer that contains the zip file
Step 2. Double-click on the zip file
Step 3. Click on the 'Begin Upload' button in the window that pops up
If your documents are not already in zip files, here is how to zip them:
- Right-click on your file(s) and select "compress <filename>" (or "compress <x> files" for multiple files) in Mac or "send to compressed file" in Windows.
- The zip file will be created in the same folder. On Mac it will be named "Archive.zip", and on Windows it will have the name of the first item in the selection that was zipped.
- Follow the steps as listed above under "If your documents are already available as zip files"
If your documents are on a USB drive, here is how to get them onto GoldFynch:
- Plug in the USB drive and open it in Explorer
- Right-click on the file (or in the case of multiple files, select all of them then right-click on them) and click on copy
- Right-click on your desktop and click on paste
- Follow the steps as listed above under "If your documents are already available as zip files," or "If your documents are not already in zip files, here is how to zip them" as appropriate
Freeing up case space after uploading files
Once uploaded, you can delete your uploaded zip file to reduce your case volume. The easiest and safest way to do so is by using GoldFynch's reclaim case space tool. To do this:
1. Navigate to the 'Overview' view through the left navigation pane
2. Click on the 'Reclaim Case Space' button
3. Check the 'Delete extracted Top Level Containers' checkbox
4. Click on the 'Cleanup' button

Upload speed
Another reason we recommend zipping files before uploading them is that it can help speed up your ingestion process:
When you upload your files, GoldFynch calculates the hash value of each file uploaded to ensure they are uncorrupted and unaltered. A production uploaded as a .zip file still has just a single hash value, so the calculation needs to be run just once. In contrast, an unzipped production would need each individual file to have its hash calculated. The difference in time that the process would take is usually negligible, but in productions that contain hundreds of thousands, or even millions of files, it is may for it to become noticeable. Hence, if you are uploading a large production, we recommend zipping it beforehand.
Some things to note about how GoldFynch handles zipped files
- GoldFynch automatically unzips uploaded zipped files, extracts attachments from emails, and handles PST files (even if they are within zipped files)
- It even unzips zipped files within zipped files, so you can just zip your entire documents folder without worrying and transfer it to GoldFynch
- Once zipped files are processed by GoldFynch and are unzipped, they will appear as a folder in your case. You can learn more about viewing zip and unzipped files here
- GoldFynch keeps your original folder structure intact when unzipping files, so all your documents will be located in their familiar locations
- GoldFynch offers additional services like sourcing data directly from your clients. You can learn more about these services here
Browser-based errors while uploading folders from Windows
The Windows API imposes a few restrictions on web browsers like Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox:
- Files with path names longer than 260 characters (including their path directory) can cause issues; their names get truncated and often result in errored, zero-byte files
- Uploading deeply-nested directory structures can potentially corrupt user data. Hence uploading of entire folders from both platforms has been disabled
Unfortunately, these interactions are beyond the control of GoldFynch, but luckily there are a number of simple ways to work around the issue. Learn more about these in our Known Issues page on the topic.
Size limitations on uploading files zipped with OSX
There is a known issue that exists with files zipped using OSX (Mac) that are above a 4GB file size which makes them unopenable on other operating systems. See our Known Issues article for more information.
